Why do one-way tickets still cost a lot?

I was looking at prices the other day and to go from the US to London, it would be about $1200. A one way ticket on the other hand costs $895. I don't understand why they cost so much. Like shouldn't the price be cut in half if you are only getting one ticket?
 
The reason is with two way tickets they have a fair chance that returning planes are full. They take more of a risk of an empty seat on the return trip.
 
I never knew this was a thing. I guess I have never found a reason to get a one way ticket. I guess only people who go on extending stays away from home or move do.
