What is the best week or weekend in summer to plan a trip or VK?

I want to go on a mini vacation. Nothing major, but I would like it to be somewhere I can enjoy the outdoors. In terms of traveling and going somewhere to stay (like a water park, lodge, etc) what week or weekend would be best in summer? I don't want to over pay and end up going somewhere that is crowded on top of it.
 
Late August is a good time. Most people who have kids have to worry about getting them ready for school. Places tend to offer "end of the summer" discounts too.
