Rights under debt collection laws

Poor Me

New member
I had a debt collection company send me a letter saying I owe $2100 from a bill from 4 years ago. I don't have the records any more but I'm pretty certain I paid that off. What are my rights and how should I handle this?

Ask them to send proof in writing, they must under the law. If they cannot, it's not a valid debt. Followup on it, make sure you go to the company that sent you to collections and ask them to verify the debt in writing.
